Phi Mu Chapters in Alabama Nominated for Philanthropy Award

Four CMN Hospitals (Children’s of Alabama, University of South Alabama Children’s and Women’s Hospital, Batson Children’s Hospital at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, and Children’s Hospital at Piedmont Columbus Regional) joined together to nominate all Phi Mu chapters in the state of Alabama for the 2020 Bill Moran Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy Award. This award is presented at the Association of Fundraising Professionals Alabama Chapter’s annual National Philanthropy Day event.

CMNH’s partnership with Phi Mu gives college students the opportunity to serve their community by raising funds and awareness for local sick and injured kids. Methods vary by campus, but each chapter demonstrates commitment to their philanthropy through a combination of advocacy, service, and fundraising.

Collectively, the eleven Phi Mu chapters in Alabama raised over $173,000 for their local CMN Hospitals in 2019.

Some other examples of how Phi Mu women go above and beyond for sick and injured kids in Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi:

  • Kappa Omega (University of South Alabama) sisters wear scrubs during sorority recruitment to demonstrate their role as advocates for sick and injured kids
  • Alpha Zeta (University of Alabama) participated in national Child Health Day by posting children’s hospital statistics throughout campus so students could learn while walking to class. The day also included a fundraising competition with Alpha Mu (Auburn University). Together the chapters raised $16,000 in 24 hours.
  • Kappa Chi (University of Montevallo) recently helped Children’s of Alabama execute its “Celebrate Children’s” awareness campaign by sharing thoughtful Instagram posts highlighting the importance of financially supporting Children’s
  • Alpha Gamma (Samford University) hosted a holiday “Paint Party” at their sorority house for patient families, which provided a stress-free, creative outlet for kids facing serious illnesses.
  • Alpha Mu (Auburn University) packs care packages and makes cards for patients; additionally they facilitate trick-or-treating for patients at Halloween.
  • Kappa Sigma (Jacksonville State University) hosts a Miracle Network Dance Marathon on their campus— this action-packed event features a dance contest and inspiring remarks from patient families. In 2019 their Dance Marathon raised a record-breaking $21,441.75!

Phi Mu women inspire their peers on campus to support pediatric healthcare and to view their local children’s hospital as a valuable resource. The fraternity serves to mold a new generation of philanthropists. Sisters graduate with a heart for children and the skills they need to make an impact on pediatric healthcare. Countless Phi Mu alumnae choose careers in medicine and allied health services because they discovered a passion for CMN Hospitals during college. Others go on to be lifelong advocates for, and donors to, children’s causes. It is critical that we have a strong pipeline of supporters to continue championing local sick and injured children. The Alabama chapters of Phi Mu fraternity foster this pipeline of vibrant, engaged women. Thank you, Phi Mu!
